Jargon Buster

Layers
These are the individual sponges that make up the height of one cake. Our cakes are typically made up of three layers.

Tiers 
These are the number of whole cakes. A two tier cake is made up of two whole cakes.

Filling
This is the buttercream and/or spread that goes between each layer of sponge.

Topper
This is usually non-edible text or images that sit on top of/in front of your cake e.g. a sparkly card topper reading 'Happy Birthday Mulla'. Acrylic toppers are also available.

Toppings
These are the items which go on top of/around your cake, often edible. For example, chocolates, flowers or macarons.

Gold leaf
These are edibkl=le shiny gold/silver flakes which are used to decorate the exterior of the cake.

Fondant
This is a firm, flexible type of icing which is usually rolled out into thin sheets and draped over the cake's surface. I do not offer fondant cakes/toppers.

Buttercream
This is a creamy, butter based icing, used to fill, coat and decorate cakes.

Piping

This is decor created using buttercream icing pushed through a nozzle to create different effects. Rosettes, swirls and ruffles are popular types of piping.

Artificial Flowers
Artificial satin flowers are generally used to decorate most cakes, rather than fondant or fresh flowers.

Dowels
These are wooden or plastic rods inside the cake to keep it together. These are typically only used in our tiered cakes.

Cake board
This is the plate that your cake sits on.

Cake stand
This is a platform used to present a cake on the table at your event.
